Independent construction
The final stage of the Curriculum Cycle is independent construction. Here, the independent application of new learnt material occurs. Students in the previous stages have gained knowledge about the topic, developed linguistic characteristics of the text type and have created a text with the assistance of a teacher. The students plan and conduct their own research to construct a text. It is important for the student to understand that the process of writing consists of a first draft, self-editing, discussing their draft with their peers and teacher for feedback and finally producing a published text (Gibbons, 2007). Providing meaningful, quality feedback to students’ writing pieces aims to improve their outcomes. John Hattie’s (2008) research revealed that “feedback was among the most powerful influences on achievement” (p.173) as it gives students a sense of achievement which motivates them to learn even more.
