Children at an early stage learn about literate mode if they are read to regularly (Christie, 2013). Vinson (2010) has stated that if young children have little or no experience of books or of reading and writing, they are very disadvantaged. In this instance, these children will require a great deal of assistance and intervention in the classroom to develop an awareness of the pleasurable aspect of reading and writing (Christie, 2013). During the middle years of primary school children’s writing changes due to their development in reading and writing. At this stage they “learn to select, interpret and evaluate information” (Christie, 2013). In the final years of primary school, students write with a developed directional flow of information and they write longer texts than younger children therefore they have a developed understanding of language which will enhance their writing (Christie, 2013).
